WHY
DO I CARE ABOUT HAZARDOUS MATERIALS?
- Safety:
- Your
personal safety, your co-workers, and the public's safety.
The ValuJet crash of 1996 that killed over 100 people
was directly related to improperly prepared hazardous
materials (oxygen generators).
- Reputation:
- Personal,
corporate and even industry reputations can be ruined.
- It's
the Law:
- The
Department of Transportation has hundreds of inspectors
dedicated to ensuring the safety of hazardous materials
shipments. They take a very dim view of violations of
the regulations. Civil fines
can be as high as $100,000 per violation per day. Criminal
penalties can include up to $250,000 per individual,
up to $500,000 per corporation, and up to 10 years in
prison. The FAA has announced fines of $275,000
for a shipment of paint related materials, $95,000 for
a shipment of ethanol solutions, $51,000 for a fuel
pump shipment, and $165,000 for a shipment of isopropyl
alcohol solutions.
